Problems with tire pressure – Good pump suggestions?

Message posted by: Geoff F.

I flatted in a race over the weekend, I hit something in the road and my front tire blew. I am pretty sure I had too much pressure in my tires.

My floor pump does not give an accurate reading, the needle on the gauge does not hold at the tire pressure. It rises and falls very fast and I just don't trust it. I have a Slime presta guage but I find it extrememly difficult to get a reading with. Sometimes it reads, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes the thing just falls apart. I really hate that thing!!

I like my floor pump, it's new, cheap, a Schwinn, but pumps well. Should I just dump it and get a new one?

Do all the gauges on floor pumps only rise to the pressure reading then fall back to 0 immediately?

Oh and I was not able to get my spare inflated after I got a flat and had to abandon. My own fault, did not have a spare with a long enough valve (got new wheels) and also did not try a new inflator I bought before the race and just blew the cartridge out upon pulling the trigger. My first DNF! Was very upsetting becuase I was having my best race yet! I think if I would have had my hands on my pump and pressure gauge at that point I would have shattered them both!
