Pardon me! Did I just fartlek?

I've been mending nicely since my marathon in Portland, so I've been experimenting with pace in my last few runs. It's been fun – but it's been giving my HR monitor a workout.

Case in point: I went for a run this morning, doing my first mile with my wife at an easy 10:32 pace.

When wife headed back and I went on, I tried to keep my pace in check.

Honeydripper dvd Mile 2 was 9:28, not bad.

Mile 3 was 9:00. Oops. Didn't plan to speed up that much.

Mile 4 was 8:49. Well, I rationalized, it was sort of in the same pace ballpark as Mile 3… (of course, my HR was jamming along in the 160s at the time…).

So, of course, when I passed Mile 4 and was wrapping up the run, I hit the gas and got up to a 6:54 pace for a little less than a quarter mile and got my HR banging along at about 180.

Gunning it felt good, though challenging; nice and smooth – not jerky. Now, if I can just get my heart to stop nearly maxing out when I do it…

So, was this more a tempo run, a fartlek, or just plain foolishness? I'm hoping to build speed and strength between marathon campaigns but I realize I'm also just a dumb kid trapped in a 44-year-old's body.
