stress fracture, or shin splints?

Uggh…

Under the Tuscan Sun dvd

so, I have been not racing this season, but training lightly and adding speed to distance in mostly moderate amounts. No runs over 7 miles except…

I went on a run that was supposed to be 5 miles and got lost…2 hours and 9 miles later, I made it home with an aching shin. No worries, I thought, I haven't bought new shoes…these are old. But then I ran some more in them…the shin hurt, but only a little. Until now. Now after a couple of miles it is quite painful. Localized pain in low shin. Hurts to tap on it. Pain also in arch of foot. Any chance that this is NOT a stress fracture…please say there is a chance…if it is a stress fracture, can anyone give me good news (anecdotal or otherwise)…I can't suffer the winter w/o running…
