Elliptical Training: Productive or Counterproductive?

I'm a recent "convert" to Chi Running, but since I don't have a gym membership and since I hate running in cold weather (I live in the fine state of NJ) the alternative I have is the elliptical machine at home. over the Spring/summer I believe I developed some form of plantar fasciitis so I stopped training on the elliptical. Running went okay with some liitle snags trying to hone down the technique. I took it up again recently figuring that once a week shouldn't be too bad. However, the foot pain has spread from the arch of my foot to the heel. What gives!?
Any insight/advice would be greatly appreciated!
