strength training and cardio-which comes first?

As a newbie to all of this, I'm wondering how to balance all the cardio that is now demanded of me (in training) with strength training.
At the gym, is it better to do cardio first (swim/run/bike combos) or the strength training (weight circuits) first? I've read here and there that its better to do cardio first (especially if I'm training for something cardio-related that will require my greatest energy) and then do strength training aftewards. But then another site stated that its better to do strength training first and then cardio, spouting something about calories burned…not sure.
What's the best answer?
