I'm attempting to design my own training plan using Joe Friel's Training Bible, and I think I'm just overwhelmed with the whole thing, but I don't have $$ for a coach (saving that for the year I do my ironman!!) and all the free plans I can find on the net are too short in duration, I would like to start planning for now, my A races are in June (sprint) and then August (olympic).
The problem I am having is choosing what my workouts are to consist of (both time and actual purpose of workout)once I've determined the focus of the workout is 'endurance' or 'speed' focused. I know I have weekly hours to go with, and once I subtract my time for weights that leaves me with my run-swim-bike times… but there really isn't much guidance on how to split that time aside from a 'long' workout in each discipline. For example, I have 7 hours for my base 1 week one, take off an hour for weights, and I have 6 hours left. My swim is supposed to consist of endurance and speed, same for the run and bike. Oh yeah, the other thing i have to contend with is I have a half marathon I don't intend to race, just finish March 3, so I realize that isn't going to follow Friels' plan, but I don't know if I should follow the hours or just add them into the plan. I've been doing very consistant base/maintanance work in all three disciplines since September, so I'm ready to get movi
ng, but I feel like I could use some structure now. Am I biting off more than i can chew, or should i just suck it up and use a 'stock' plan and try again when i have more experience? Any advice would be so fantastic, I think my brain is getting fried from my over-analyzation of the training possibilities….
