Back On My Feet

Here's a quick update on the "Back on My Feet" program in Philadelphia.
If you missed my previous post, Back on My Feet is a non-profit that was started about 6 months ago after a woman named Anne Mahlum started running with some guys at a homeless shelter that she ran by every morning. It has grown like crazy, and this week we began a program at a fourth location, the first women's shelter to join. The goal is to eventually have running programs going at every shelter in the city, including one for children.

For example, I just received an offer from New Balance to provide a free pair of shoes for every single member of the organization. On Saturday I gave a ChiRunning lesson to a man who owns an on-line financial management software company, and he is offering to set up a very sophisticated fund-raising program on the website for free (a $50,000 value)! This is a great time to get involved in a super cool idea.
This morning I joined a man named Shef who is just getting back on the road after a couple month break due to hip problems. I wanted to make sure he gets started right, so we headed off on a 3 mile walk-run while the rest of the group split up into a 4-mile pack and a 5-mile pack. Shef was doing great. He has a nice, relaxed, natural gait, and as a result of his injury is more mindful of how he feels while running. I gave him a few pointers along the way, but was mostly interested in just observing him. Near the end of our run, he said he was beginning to feel some pain in his hip, so showed him how to shorten his stride. We were running very slow, so I explained that the stride should be relative. About ten seconds later he exclaimed that the pain went away. Super cool!
As if that wasn't cool enough, just to help get this guy back on track, when we returned to the shelter and met back up with the group, Shef was presented a new digital camera for passing 250 total miles! We had a big celebration right there on the sidewalk, and the whole group beamed with pride.
