Indoor open water training

I swim my laps at the YMCA close to my office and discovered something today. I usually swim on Tues, Thurs, Sat but had to switch to today (Monday) because of a meeting. Unbeknownst to me there is a water aerobics course on Monday taking up most of the lanes in the pool with 3 left for laps. I started swimming and was struggling and could not figure out why until I looked over at the aerobics class that had 30 people in it. They were bouncing, jumping, and running in place making waves in the pool. The whole pool had some pretty nice waves going – much different than a glass like lap pool. As I swam in the pool with these waves it reminded me of what it was like on my first Olympic when there was a nice wind whipping up some small waves which I struggled with.
Several other swimmers in the lap lanes seemed to be perterbed about the waves situation and quit but I thought hey this is as close as I am going to get to open water swimming for a while.
So if you want to have a close to real life open water swim and your gym does water aerobics go swim on those days.
