eugene marathon report – crash, bang, boom

Message posted by: Mark B.

This will be a quick report, because I really don’t know what to say. I came into the race with lofty goals (breaking 4 hours in my second marathon) and what seemed like a solid training cycle. The conditions were nearly perfect.

And I crashed and burned in what was one of the most painful experiences of my life. A few months bank, I posed the question “Fitter or foolhardy?” when trying to set my pace. It seemed that my pace – just under 9 minutes a mile – was solid, but as someone said, only time will tell.

Here are the telling times:

Shooter movie Slightly too slow, but in the ballpark.

Trouble was, I’d started to notice two miles before the halfway mark that my legs were starting to go. My heart rate started flirting with, and then crossed over into the 90 percent zone. Lactic acid flooded my legs. When I saw the half marathon runners make a turn to end their race, I wished I could join them.

I’d ran a decent pace – if I was running a half marathon. But I had 13 more miles to go and I wasn’t sure if I’d make it.

I did manage to avoid stepping off the course, but only because I didn’t want to disappoint my family who’d gathered to cheer me on in my hometown marathon – and I didn’t want to have to write a big ‘ol DNF on the back of the race shirt. It was a nice shirt.

So, I wasn’t fitter. I was foolhardy.

Irony is, if I’d just run the LSD pace I’d held during my two 20-milers, I would have finished sooner. Arg.

Live and learn.
