vancouver half marathon rr

Yesterday I ran the Vancouver Half Marathon again. Last year it was my first ever HM and I finished in 1:57, but the pictures of my finish show it looks more like a near death experience. It wasn’t pretty. I did 4 more HM’s last year so I have a little more experience under my belt now. In the mean time, I also signed up for IMC. Anyway, on Saturday, in torrential rain, I did a 2 hour “quite fast” ride on my new deep rim wheels. That, it being week 2 of a 3/1 cycle meant it was a pretty heavy training week So, the race was going to be on fatigued legs. That’s meant to be a good thing for IronMan training, right?

The Number 23 rip

The day started at 5:30am. I decided to “try” a PowerBar (Oatmeal Raisin) as the pre-race calorie booster, about an hour before race start. Chewy! Very chewy! Ran 1Km to catch a bus downtown, and to shake the cobwebs out of my legs. It hurt. I was gasping. Good start.

The Company of Wolves movie download Gun goes off at 7am, set out at a steady pace (there’s a first!) and get into a nice, ticking over rhythmn much quicker than normal. By mile 3 my legs are aching. HR file, breathing fine, legs not fine. “Oh well, I need to get used to the feeling”. Keep plodding along, and get to the 5 mile marker – 39:40. What? Sub 8? Wow, feels a lot slower. Sweet!

My legs are now numb-ish. “OOOh!. A station. Free power-gels. Let’s try a new flavour. Strawberry banana!” “Yeuch! Remember not to buy any of those!” Chug down some of my Accelerade to get rid of the taste.

Here comes Prospect Point. 200ft of elevation in 1Km. Last year I dropped from a 9:00 pace to about 12:00 on this puppy. Managed to keep a decent pace up it this time, and when I got to the top, it’s almost downhill all the way to the finish line (4 miles). I flew down the other side (got to love “Evolution running”) passing loads of people slamming their feet on the downslope.

Got to the 11 mile marker and the crowds really thickened. I kicked! Not far to go now. 12 miles. Need fluid. 12.2 miles. Need fluid. Kicked too early. With only a few hundred yards to go, it was all I could do to keep running at that pace. I could have slowed down, but that’s not why we’re here, is it. And, got to learn to “dig deep” for the big one. Made it to the finish line in 1:45:??

Canes movie

Not quite a PB, but that had been on a pancake flat coarse, so it’s different!!

1) PowerBars don’t sit well in my system. Stick with the all liquid fuels. (I hydrate like I’ve been in the desert for a month!)

2) I need to do more hill running.

3) It’s only 16 weeks to IMC (including taper). I need to do some heavy bricks!!

4) Running fatigued is ugly.

5) I have no idea just how ugly IMC is going to be for me.

Can’t wait!
