crunching the #s

The other day I began to assemble some tax information in preparation to baffle the accountant. That got me started with numbers and today those numbers swirling in my brain turned to triathlon, racing and training. Imagine that!
With calculator in hand, discoveries were made. An iron distance race is 140.6 miles and a half iron, according to Captain 0, is half that distance or 70.3. The swim represents 1.7% of the race, the bike 79.7% and the run @ 18.6%.
An olympic distance race (1.5K,40K,10K) is 51.5 kilometers. I did not break the Ks in to miles as the math is the same. The swim portion in an olympic race is 2.9%, the bike is 77.7% and the run represents 19.4% of the race.
Based on these knowns, it might seem reasonable that training should be done in a similar ratio. This is just my logic and my super hero, Captain 0, said the premise was, “logical, maybe not right, but logical.”
So with this information in hand I go to the Ontri training log and get my year ending swim, bike and run totals to see how they stack up with the above race ratios. Viola, the training miles ratios were generally in the race ratio ballpark: 1.85% swim, 73.5% bike and 24.6% run.

At any rate, it was sort of a fun exercise. I doubt that my training plan for 2009 will change much based on this revelation but I like numbers. Gives me something to do on long runs.
Care to do the math?
