cause to run charity: breast cancer research

After years of avoidance, I finally signed up to run my first marathon (July 26). To give myself an extra kick in the tail, I’m raising research funds for the California Breast Cancer Research Program. (Disclosure: I work for the program.)
95% of all funds received by the California Breast Cancer Research Program support breast cancer research and education. Most of our money comes from a portion of a state cigarette tax, but those funds are in decline, and we’re scrambling for other ways to supplement that funding source.
Our program was developed from the dreams of advocates and breast cancer patients who were frustrated with the slow progress of breast cancer research funding at the federal level. They went to the state and demanded action. Our focus is on filling the gaps that the major funders ignore – research that focuses on the underserved, that challenges assumptions, that pushes the boundaries of the traditional, conservative funders. It’s a long road to success, but we’re pushing our way through.
I know times are tough all over, but I’d love it if you could spare a few dollars to help me raise more money for breast cancer research.
