crash and burn on the run

Amazing Journey: The Story of The Who release Message posted by: Diane B.

I crashed and burned during a 10K yesterday. It’s a beautiful route -flat to rolling with one or two challenging hills. Temps are usually in the 50′s for this annual race, but yesterday they were in the mid-to-high 80′s. This is the first dose of hot weather we’ve had this year. It was hot and sunny and there was very little wind on more than half of the course.

Kismat Konnection I tried to hydrate as much as possible the day before and used a race belt with 2 small bottles during the race (one water, one sports drink). I also grabbed water at each stop and poured it on my head to help cool down. I was fine for the first 3 miles then I started feeling dizzy and nauseous. For the next 3.2 miles I’d alternate between running until I felt sick and walking until I felt better. Drinking the sports drink made me feel more nauseous, so I tried to sip the water, but I just felt terrible As if that wasn’t bad enough, I started hyperventillating when I crossed the finish line and then my vision “went white”, not black, but white – kind of like someone turning the brightness all the way up on a tv. Yeh, this was not a good race.

Anyway, my friend parked me under a tree and got me some ice cold gatorade (medics and police were already too busy with several folks who needed oxygen). I drank the gatorade and a few minutes later felt fine.

I know I was dehydrated, but I thought I did everything right to try to prevent it. I’ve never taken supplements. Are there any supplements I should have taken? Salt tablets, maybe? Any other suggestions? I definitely don’t want to feel like that again!
