rr dallas white rock marathon

It was a beautiful day for a race. Perfect day to run a marathon. About 45 degrees at the start with the wind not getting above 5mph. A little bit of fog, but it didn’t damper anything

There was so much positive energy prior to the gun. 20K people in a great mood. Couldn’t ask for anything better. The start of the race went great although it appeared that the corral set up that was supposed to be more efficient than last year didn’t exactly seem to help things much. But overall, it was a fantastic start.

And there I was, sitting on the couch feeling sorry for myself watching the coverage on TV. I vividly recall the feeling at the same time last year as I began the half marathon in the same venue. I didn’t know if I wanted to cry or kick a wall.

I woke up at 4:30 and half heartedly started putting on my race gear and poured a bowl of quaker oats. But I pretty much knew I wasn’t going anywhere. I had tossed and turned all night, cycling between chills and sweats. I reluctantly put in the thermometer. When it went off, i put in a different one hoping for a misread. Both came back between 101 and 102. Damn.

So my first marathon is still yet to come. I really wanted to do my first at White Rock. Its a great run and a great area. Its where I used to run and ride quite a bit 10 years ago before I got hitched and went on hiatus for awhile. But I don’t want to wait a year and I would like to use the training I’ve put in, so I will likely do Fort Worth Cowtown in February. Its a smaller venue and the area isn’t as familiar to me, but oh well.

By the end of the week, I will decide for sure on the race to do, modify a simple training plan, and start getting motivated for it. But in the meantime, I will likely keep feeling sorry for myself and grieve the passing of “my race”.

Thanks to everyone who provided insight and help with my numerous questions over the past several months. I really appreciate it.
