running pace

Message posted by: sara j.

I’m pretty new to triathlons. I’ve only completed one, and would like to do more. I’m currently training for a sprint, and have a question about running. I run pretty slow, in part due to a short stride, and I’m also just slow. I run a 5k in about 34-35 minutes, and my one mile time is around 10:30. I’d like my 5k time to be closer to 10 minute miles. So my question is on how to pace my self when training. Do I try to run at a 10 minute mile pace, and stop and walk when I need to. Or do I run at a slower pace that it is more comfortable to me, and slowly try to work up. I always feel discouraged after a run when my times are slow slow. Needless to say running is the hardest part of training for me. Would love to have some feedback on what you all think. I’ve searched the message boards, and have found some good posts on running for time instead of miles, but need to know about what pace I should be running at.

Thanks,

Sara
