I had finished the bike portion of my weekly brick at my local greenway and was topping about a 6% grade on the run when I encountered a guy standing at the top smoking a cigarette (my guess is he got to that point and stopped so he wouldn’t have to walk up that hill). This was probably 1/2 mile into my 4 miles. As he is puffing on his cig and blowing smoke in all directions, he looks at me and says, “you gonna make it?” I wanted so bad to stop and say, “yes, and I will also outlive you by 30 years or so even though you’re younger than I am.” But I took the high road and kept on going. About half a mile later, I encountered another runner who said I was looking great! Guess I just looked bad to the smoker.
