race simulation for a marathon?

Message posted by: daniel d.

Hey Folks, I am training for my first marathon (Bay State) and have been following a plan. I have been reading some theories about treating one of your long runs as a race simulation. I was wondering if anyone has done this.

Here is the workout that I am thinking about. Take my last 20 mile run and reduce it to 18. Run the first 9 miles at goal pace plus 30 seconds; the next 9 miles at 5 to 10 seconds faster than goal pace.

This simulation splits my long run pace with my goal pace. The theory claims that this will have me running the second 9 miles in a slightly pre-fatigued state; as a result, I’ll really know whether or not my goal pace is attainable or not by virtue of how I perform over the second 9 miles.

Any thoughts? Should I try it or stick with the old 20 mile run? All comments welcomed.
