undertrained marathon strategy question

Message posted by: Ryan B.

I will start this off by saying up front, i know i probably should not be doing this marathon…

so, here is the story. I completed Ironman CDA in late June. started my Oct 10th marathon training about a week after the ironman and had really solid fast training for about a month. early August came around and I moved to my family’s vineyard for work and harvest. it was too hot down here for me to run.. (i prefer 80′s at most.. not 105-112)… i was able to manage running for about 2 or 3 weeks, but kind of got burned out and lost my love for running. I pretty much took the last 5 weeks off of running and now the marathon is 2 weeks away. I convinced another friend of mine who was kind of in the same boat as me to hold back and walk/jog/stare at pretty girls in the back with me. sooo, my question as far as race strategy goes.. will this potentially work?

run 3 miles, walk 1 mile

run 3 miles, walk 1 mile

run 3 miles, walk 1 mile

run 2 miles, walk 1 mile

run 2 miles, walk 1 mile

run 2 miles, walk 1 mile

run 2 miles, walk 1 mile

run the last 2 miles.

this totals to 19 miles running, and 7 walking. (same ratio i had on my first ever marathon…although that went run 19, walk 7!)

my idea is that i will allow my legs to clear any lactic acid buildup when i am walking and hopefully wont overstress my undertrained legs as much as i would by trying to run the whole thing.

am i a complete idiot for attempting this? does anyone have another idea as to how to complete the race? i do not care about time, i just wanna go have fun with my friends.

thanks.- Ryan
